Vaginal Rejuvenation

The vaginoplasty procedure has become a more popular procedure in recent years as patients have become more comfortable with expressing their concerns about their vaginas and any perceived looseness or laxity. This looseness is most frequently noticed after one or multiple vaginal deliveries, but there are other causes as well. The age at which this procedure is performed varies widely, and Dr. Kenneth Hughes can help you decide if this procedure is appropriate for your goals.

Dr. Hughes performs a vaginoplasty to remedy laxity or looseness of the vagina experienced by the patient. The vaginoplasty procedure involves removing some of the mucosal tissue within the vaginal canal and then narrowing the canal to create a smaller diameter. The tissue swath is taken from the posterior vaginal wall and the area is closed with several layers of suture to help reconstruct the smaller vaginal canal.

This procedure involves surgery performed within the vagina to help tighten it. There are no external stitches as nothing is performed on the outside of the vagina. Occasionally, the vaginal introitus or entrypoint may require tightening as well.

board-certified plastis surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Hughes

Dr. Kenneth Hughes, Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon, provides female rejuvenation procedures including labiaplasty and vaginoplasty in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. Some of these procedures are referred to by various names including labiaplasty, labial rejuvenation, vaginaplasty or vaginoplasty, vaginal rejuvenation, female rejuvenation, and others. These references can be extremely confusing to patients as the terminology is not consistent. The vaginoplasty refers to a surgical procedure that involves only the vagina and not the labia. The labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the labia and not altering the vagina. The vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the laxity within the vagina and provides for a tighter internal anatomy.

other surgeries performed with vaginoplasty

As vaginoplasty is usually performed to tighten that area after deliveries, many of the patients will also desire surgeries like the mommy makeover surgery.  The mommy makeover procedures frequently involve a tummy tuck and breast augmentation along with other surgeries including breast lift, liposuction, and Brazilian buttlift.

vaginoplasty surgery day with dr. hughes

The surgery day starts with the filling out of consent paperwork and the taking of vital signs.  You will meet the nurse and then meet with the anesthesiologist.  The procedure is performed under general anesthesia for maximal comfort and surgical precision.  It is a relatively short outpatient procedure of 1 to 2 hours aimed at tightening loose vaginal tissues with no visible scars.  Patients can leave the surgery center with a supervising individual after an hour or so in the recovery or PACU following surgery.

vaginoplasty recovery and complications

Patients must refrain from intercourse, strenuous physical activity, and vigorous cleansing during the first 6 weeks after surgery to prevent suture line disruption, opening of the incisions, and bleeding.  The two most common complications are suture line disruption or incision opening and bleeding.  95% of the patients experience a straightforward recovery experience without any setbacks whatsoever.

The stitches used will dissolve so that patients do not have to be concerned about a painful suture removal or permanent sutures that may form abscesses or long-term pain.

results of vaginoplasty surgery

In general, patients report a tighter vaginal vault, improved experience during sex, and better self esteem.  Some report reduced incontinence as well.

In general, this rejuvenation procedure is not intended to treat incontinence.  Other anatomic abnormalities including rectocele may preclude performing the vaginal rejuvenation procedure. Dr. Hughes will discuss in detail some of these relevant anatomic considerations during your consultation.

The healing period is generally about 6 to 8 weeks and at that point the scar tissue is strong enough to resist changes.

what is the cost of vaginoplasty?

  • The cost of vaginal rejuvenation or vaginoplasty in most cases is $9000, though more complicated cases may require more surgical time and thus cost a bit more.

Please note that pricing for Vaginoplasty may vary based on the individual needs of the patient.
