Male Breast Reduction Los Angeles, CA
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the development of breasts or breast tissue in males. Most males develop the condition during puberty, and the breast tissue does not regress completely over time or some of the tissue remains. Patients may be bothered by the appearance both in and out of clothing. The condition may range from a “puffy” areola or nipple to more significant enlargement.
The cause for gynecomastia is frequently idiopathic, meaning that the cause is unknown in most cases. There are numerous other causes for gynecomastia including anabolic steroids, marijuana, certain prescription medications, liver failure, and certain tumors, among other things. If you have taken such medications or have been diagnosed with such conditions please let Dr. Hughes know about this during your consultation.
There is a wide range of breast development among males including a small amount of breast tissue up to a large amount of breast tissue and skin that is droopy or loose. Depending upon where you fall in the gamut, Dr. Hughes will help you select the operation which is best for you.
Dr. Hughes offers male breast reduction through a variety of minimal scar liposuction and excisional techniques, and most patients can be treated through these maneuvers. Though the conventional teaching has been that liposuction cannot remove breast tissue, Dr. Hughes has found that he can remove the breast tissue with liposuction alone. This allows for small segmental reduction of the breast to produce the best contour possible and avoid overresection, cratering, and contour deformities. This also provides for much less scarring and potential poor scarring concerns.
The skin overlying the breast tissue has great capability to contract after removal of tissue. In addition to the removal of the breast tissue, Dr. Hughes liposuctions the remainder of the chest to help create fantastic contours of the chest. Only in the more significant gynecomastia cases is the removal of skin necessary. Both types of surgeries are represented in the photo galleries for gynecomastia.
The gynecomastia procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, but it can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or local anesthesia alone in a fully accredited surgery center by the state of California. The procedure takes less than 2 hours to complete, even in the most complicated of cases. The patient goes home the same day.
The pain associated with the procedure is typically mild and may require only a few days of pain medication. The patient will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks to improve contours and assure that the skin heals to the underlying tissue without the develop of fluid collections. In 2 to 3 weeks in cases of uncomplicated surgery and healing, the patient can return to exercise or more strenuous activity.
