Calf Augmentation with Fat Grafting and Calf Implants Los Angeles and Beverly Hills
Dr. Kenneth Hughes, MD, performs fat grafting to the calves and calf implants for calf augmentation. These are the two most commonly performed methods of calf augmentation.
Dr. Hughes has been a natural bodybuilder for over 20 years, and he sees many male and female patients who want to improve the appearance of their bodies. Calf augmentation and pectoral augmentation are the two of the most popular body augmentation procedures we perform.
Calf Augmentation with Implants
Calf implants come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and volumes and can be altered to create almost any effect. The implants are composed of a cohesive silicone material. The solid implant can be shaped on the operating room table to create the contours the patient has requested. In addition, the implants can be tailored to perfectly fit the muscle or fascial dimensions.
Some patients opt for only augmentation of one portion of the calf or the other. Some want augmentation of only the inner portion of the calf, while others are interested in augmentation of the inner and outer portions of the calf. Dr. Hughes will discuss your options with you during your consultation for this plastic-surgery procedure.

BEFORE & AFTER GALLERY
Dr. Hughes offers all forms of calf augmentation. The two most popular methods are augmentation by fat grafting and augmentation with semisolid implants.
Calf Implant Surgery Day
The calf-augmentation operation takes one to two hours to perform. At the start, the patient is given either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Dr. Hughes can place the calf implants through incisions hidden behind the knee in the crease.
Once the implants have been placed, the incisions are closed with sutures. Because this is an outpatient procedure, the patient will go home the same day after remaining one to two hours in the recovery center.
Calf Implant Surgery Recovery
After the calf-enhancement operation, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for about six weeks. Taking time off from work will be necessary, especially for jobs that require a lot of standing or walking.
There will be swelling that will make walking difficult for the first few weeks. It is important to maintain elevation of the legs to reduce swelling, post-operative pain, and the chances of the incisions opening.
Cost of Calf Implants
Please note that pricing for Calf Implants may vary based on the individual needs of the patient.
Results of Calf Implant Surgery
The results are immediate and long-lasting, but the tight fascial compartments limit augmentation to 1 to 2 inches in the circumference of the calf. The main potential complications include bleeding, infection, mobility of the implant, and extrusion of the implant.
Calf Augmentation Surgery with Fat Grafting
The second type of calf-enhancement operation involves fat grafting, which avoids the issue of having a foreign body placed inside the calf.
Fat grafting is a technique in which the patient’s own body fat is used to enhance the volume of their calves. Because of this, it offers the secondary benefit of liposuction of other areas of the body for contour improvement.
Calf Fat Grafting Surgery Day
The operation takes one to two hours to perform. First, liposuction is used to harvest fat cells from an area of the body where there is excess fat. Popular regions of the body for this include the abdomen, sides, back, and thighs, although any region can be used as a harvest site. The fat is then purified to remove unneeded materials and dead and damaged fat cells.
Once this fat has been purified, it will be carefully injected into the thighs at key points to enhance volume. The fat is placed through a 3-mm incision near the knee on each side. 300 cc per calf or more can be placed at one time. The patient will go home the same day after remaining one to two hours in the recovery center.
Cost of Calf Fat Grafting
- $12,500 to $18,000 (determined by the number of areas liposuctioned to retrieve enough fat to get at least 240 cc per calf)
Please note that pricing for Calf Augmentation with Fat Grafting may vary based on the individual needs of the patient.
Recovery After Calf Fat Grafting
The recovery is easier for fat grafting than for calf implants. Still, after the operation, the patient should avoid strenuous activity for about six weeks to allow the incisions to heal. There will be swelling that will make walking difficult for the first few weeks. Keeping the legs elevated is essential during the recovery period.
The Results of Fat Grafting to the Calves
Although there is resorption of some of the fat, increases of 1 to 2 inches in circumference are common. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, fat necrosis, and contour irregularities.
