Silicone Injection Removal and Biopolymer Removal in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills

Dr. Kenneth Hughes, Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon, has performed many of the most complex silicone and biopolymer injection removal procedures in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.  These silicone injections and biopolymers can cause serious health issues when injected into the body, and surgical intervention is required to remove these substances from the body. Dr. Kenneth Hughes is a top provider of biopolymer and silicone removal in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, who frequently treats patients whose lives and health have been negatively impacted by the injection of these foreign materials.

Complications with Silicone Injections

Injections of various foreign materials have been around for as long as there have been sharp hollow tubes and foreign materials.  Silicone and other substances have been injected into the face and almost every other body part you could imagine.  The most common foreign body injections at this time are performed for buttock, hip, lip, and face augmentation.

These are certainly not recommended by plastic surgeons, and these injections are frequently performed by individuals without appropriate training using less than sterile material that is not FDA approved for injection in the first place. There are numerous complications with these injections including skin loss, pulmonary emboli, muscle death, patient death, massive infection leading to death, etc.  To be perfectly clear, butt augmentation should occur through only two routes: 1) transfer of fat referred to as a Brazilian buttlift or 2) butt implant surgery.

Patients frequently report ongoing inflammation and chronic pain syndromes that can result in moving pains throughout the body from the legs down into the ankles and into the abdomen as well.  Some of these chemicals that spread in this nature are liquid and are very difficult to completely remove.  These include hydrogel materials, biopolymers, and silicone along with other injected oils.

Removal of Silicone, Hydrogel, PMMA, or Biopolymers

Dr. Kenneth Hughes removes these types of materials on a regular basis, and he attempts to do so through very small incisions placed and hidden appropriately.  For larger removals, larger incisions will have to be made.  To be clear, liposuction WILL NOT remove these oils in any meaningful way.  The scar tissue and inflammation that develops around the silicone or hydrogel will prevent the liposuction cannula from being able to access these small pockets of oil.  For larger removals, there will be a great amount of skin that will need to removed as well, particularly if the skin is very diseased as well.

The easier removals include solid substances like PMMA. These are discrete materials that can be removed without destroying the innate tissue. This makes for a much easier reconstruction when it comes to fixing the defects caused by the removal of the substances. Unfortunately, most of the illegal materials injected are liquid viscous oil that is not only impossible to completely remove, but the tissue damage wrought by these materials may be overwhelming for the individual, leading to fulminant infection and death.

If they are not a source of ongoing infection, they can be very damaging to the skin, fat, and muscle and the blood supply to these tissues.  Skin that is discolored, purple, or black is severely damaged and may not heal after surgery or may require additional surgeries just for the removal of this dead or compromised tissue.

These silicone or hydrogel removal surgeries are not easy to perform and come with a litany of complications based upon how poor the tissue of the patient is at the time of surgery and how much silicone has been injected as well as where it has been injected.  Silicone injected into the muscle will not be removed due to the incapacitating effects of removing muscle tissue and its consequences in regard to posture, ambulation, and overall function in addition to greater risk for silicone emboli in this more vascular bed.

Amazing Experience

I cannot speak enough about what an amazing experience I had. From the consultation to the surgery date and the post op the doctor was involved in every step of the process. In addition his ability to hear your wants and translate that to your result is impressive. This is a doctor who knows what he is doing and will make sure you have the safe and rewarding experience you’re looking for.

What to Expect with Biopolymer and Silicone Removal Surgery

These removal surgeries may require 1, 2 or more surgeries to get as much removed as possible.  In addition, the list of complications includes tissue loss or death, incision separation, wound breakdown or poor scarring, deformity, multiple surgeries, multiple hospitalizations, fluid collections, infection, bleeding, multiple reconstructions, and others.

These surgeries are not taken lightly by Dr. Hughes. Dr. Hughes is not a salesman and he will not sell you anything.  However, if the condition of the tissue and silicone is causing a great deal of inflammation, swelling, itching, pain, or other constitutional symptoms, these issues will NOT improve over time without surgical intervention.

Quite frequently, the patient already has defects or skin damage preceding any type of removal surgery. Dr. Kenneth Hughes minimizes additional damage by removing as little native tissue as possible while removing as much foreign material as possible.

Dr. Kenneth Hughes then has the significant skill set of being able to reconstruct these defects with a variety of fat transfer techniques and butt implants. Dr. Kenneth Hughes performs these removals and reconstructions every day. The type of removal depends on the type of substance, the amount of surface area involved, and the patient desires. During your consultation in Los Angeles Dr. Hughes will explain the details of your procedure, including what to expect during your recovery.

Silicone, PMMA, Hydrogel, and Biopolymers Removed from Buttocks Daily by Dr. Kenneth Hughes

Dr. Kenneth Hughes received a phone call from a former Brazilian buttlift patient who was distressed that another doctor had ordered an MRI and had removed some tissue for a specimen sent to a lab. Apparently, the other surgeon was unsure if something other than fat had been injected into this patient.

The patient was very emotional, and Dr. Kenneth Hughes was absolutely incensed to hear that some other surgeon would think that a board-certified plastic surgeon who had performed more than 4000 Brazilian buttlifts (or fat transfers to the buttocks) would have transferred some strange material into a patient’s buttocks. To be clear, the only 2 suitable methods for buttock augmentation are fat transfer to the buttocks and solid silicone gluteal implants (buttock implants).

Quite to the contrary, a significant portion of Dr. Kenneth Hughes’s practice is removing foreign material injected into patients by non-plastic surgeons and non-doctors sometimes in hotel rooms or garages. Frequently, the patient does not know if the injector has any credentials at all. In addition, they do not know exactly what was injected or how much was injected. This usually leads to a concern about the danger of having this substance within the body.

Silicone Injections and Biopolymer Removal from Buttocks Procedure Los Angeles
Patients frequently have pain, and concerns about infection, especially infection leading to death. Dr. Kenneth Hughes removes these substances sometimes several times a week from patients from all over the globe. The injections of these substances into the buttocks would be considered malpractice or negligence and are simply not an option among doctors practicing medicine.

Unfortunately, many surgeons will refuse such patients because there is more intrinsic risk in operating on a patient who has non-sterile injections of unknown material present. Dr. Kenneth Hughes has been removing these substances for years to help alleviate symptoms and to help allay fears and eliminate worries of those patients who made the previous poor decision to have these substances injected.

Combining the Inferior Butt Lift and Bodylift Surgery with Silicone Removal

Most recently, Dr. Kenneth Hughes removed a great deal of silicone from an individual and then removed a great deal of skin from the buttock fold at the same time. This procedure accomplished two goals for the patient:

1) The patient wanted to remove the hardened tissue and silicone.
2) The patient wanted to make the area appear smoother and make the buttocks appear shorter and rounder without a lot of loose, hanging skin. Dr. Hughes was able to improve all of these aspects at one surgery with the inferior buttock lift incision.

The inferior butt lift surgery is a surgery that very few surgeons perform or perform in a certain way. The goal of the procedure is not to flatten the buttock or to reduce the buttock/leg definition, but rather it is to tighten the skin of the posterior thigh and improve the buttock shape as well as the sagging or droopiness of the buttocks.

Sometimes, Dr. Kenneth Hughes utilizes this approach in conjunction with the lower body lift incision. Sometimes, the removal of the silicone is done at one time with the inferior buttock lift.  Following these silicone removal surgeries, the patient can be reconstructed with fat grafting or implants to improve the areas of removal if necessary.

What is the Cost of Silicone and Biopolymer Removal from the Buttocks?

  • The cost of silicone or biopolymer removal from the buttocks is $22,000 (in straightforward cases)  to $30,000 or more in more complicated cases.

Please note that the price of Silicone and Biopolymer Removal from the Buttocks may vary based on the individual needs of the patient.  Also, please note that this type of surgery may require more than one removal surgery and then a reconstruction procedure.
