Labial Rejuvenation in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, CA

Dr. Kenneth Hughes, Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon, performs labiaplasty in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.  Some of these procedures are referred to by various names, labiaplasty, labial rejuvenation, and vaginal rejuvenation, among others. There is an increasing trend toward women voicing concerns about the appearance of their genitalia.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Defining the anatomy of the region is absolutely essential to understanding the nature of the surgeries involved.  The mons pubis (pubic mound), the labia majora (outer lips), and the labia minora (inner lips) may all be areas that are amenable to improvement. Mons liposuction can be an important adjunct to decrease the fullness of the pubic region. The labia majora are sometimes addressed if there is an issue of deflation or the perception of bulkiness or fullness in the labia majora.  The labia majora can be reduced in size with a reduction procedure.  The labia majora can also be grafted with fat to fill out a deflated labia majora.  The labia minora (the inner lips) are most frequently addressed due to concerns of enlargement and this surgery on the labia minora is what is referred to as a labiaplasty by patients and plastic surgeons alike.

Some women experience discomfort during sex or physical activity from enlarged labia, and a reduction labiaplasty makes these activities less painful when the contours are improved.   Some women want the appearance of the labia refined for purely cosmetic concerns.  Some women may want asymmetry addressed reducing one side more so than the other.  Whatever the reason, Dr. Hughes can reduce and reshape the labia to produce a more refined look to the labia in a simple outpatient procedure.

Trim Labiaplasty

There are two basic variations of the labiaplasty, the trim method and the wedge method. Dr. Hughes performs both types and allows the patient to decide based on what appearance she would like to have. The trim method involves removing the outer edge of the labia to reduce it.  Thus, in this method, the pigmented border is partially or completely removed. A small cuff of labial tissue is always preserved in either method, usually 8 mm or more.   This preservation of tissue prevents desiccation.  The trim method is closed in a very precise fashion to prevent scalloping or unevenness.

Wedge Labiaplasty

The wedge method preserves the natural, darker border of the labia and thus retains the hyperpigmented border. This method involves removing an internal wedge of tissue to reduce the size of the labia. Though the risk for separation in this method is higher, the border is smooth as this method preserves the natural, darker border of the labia.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

In addition, the clitoral hood can be reduced as well if indicated. This can be performed in several ways depending upon the amount of laxity and the location of laxity.  Many times this is done in conjunction with the labiaplasty as the tissues are in continuity.  The procedure can be done to reduce redundant tissue that can cause pain and reduce ability to climax. In this procedure, it is always better to be conservative in the reduction so as to avoid too much clitoral exposure.

Labiaplasty Surgery Day

The procedure takes about 1 hour to perform and the recovery is usually uneventful. Patients must refrain from intercourse, strenuous physical activity, and vigorous cleansing during the first 4 to 6 weeks after surgery to prevent suture line disruption and opening of the incisions.

Other Surgeries Performed with Labiaplasty

Many of the patients who desire labiaplasty may also be interested in vaginoplasty or other surgeries like the mommy makeover surgery.  The mommy makeover procedures frequently involve a tummy tuck and breast augmentation along with other surgeries including breast lift, liposuction, and Brazilian buttlift.
